One of my best friends, Sean, mentioned this concept of Blind Work to me last night. Sean’s a super successful guy (plays in the NHL), and is a big role model in my life. The period I’m in, in my life right now is this phase of Blind Work. He’s been through this and he’s on the other side now.
Blind work: Working hard without knowing if the outcome you expect will actually come.
How do you get around blind work?
You don’t.
This is what hard feels like.
This is why no one lasts long in this phase.
So how do you keep yourself going?
Don’t focus on the outcome as the reward but the process as a reward.
It feels good to work hard.
It feels good to work late.
It feels good to lift heavy weight and run.
Attach the reward to this feeling and you’ll end up finding yourself able to work and grind for hours, days, weeks, months, and years on end.
How do you know you’re not working on the wrong things?
What if you tell yourself that working late is part of blind work but it’s not actually moving you closer to your goal?
Do you have your goals set out?
